Monster Operations

When Brian Chambers and I sat down in late 2023 to figure out what has now become edge monsters, we had many ideas. We wanted to have a broad impact on the community by delivering guidance on technical topics enterprise architects face when determining an edge strategy. Not from a vendor or industry analyst perspective but from real-world practitioners with massive production deployments. If we could gather a group of edge veterans and get them to share their experiences, both good and bad, we knew this would benefit the entire industry. Of course, there are other forms with similar goals. The Kubernetes LinkedIn group comes to mind. But we wanted something different.

“Any discussion with more than 12 participants becomes a presentation”

We set out to build a structure that remains a small discussion group that can benefit everyone. We start with an environment where the group can discuss, privately and frankly, best practices and challenges of production edge deployments.

Today, Edge Monsters is an invite-only 12-member working group of enterprise architects with large production edge deployments. By keeping the group small, we power discussions over presentations, delivering a better outcome through combined experience. We meet monthly for 90 minutes on a pre-specified edge architecture topic. Tilly Gilbert, from STL Partners, participates in the discussion and helps the team prepare the anonymized blog post capturing the conversation. Our monthly blog posts amplify this knowledge to the community. Contact us if you are interested in joining.

What’s with the name?

We credit Joe Pearson with the Edge Monsters name, an excellent first contribution to the group. The Edge Monsters name follows in the footsteps and traditions of the Web Monsters community started by the largest 20 webmasters in 1995. It later spawned Ad Monsters, a community of the largest website advertising companies.
